About Smart Map Imaging …
Smart Map Imaging was founded in 1998 by Joel Haugen following a 5-year consulting contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (BPA). In 2008 Haugen entered politics and won the Republican Primary in Oregon's 1st Congressional District; he was subsequently banned from Oregon Republican Party activities and ended up running in the general election as an Independent, but lost to the incumbent in the general election. Prior to 1998 he worked as a public school science & social studies teacher for 10 years that included a 1-year teacher-on-special-assignment position with the Oregon Fish and Wildlife Department doing statewide environmental workshops. Before becoming a certified teacher, Haugen worked as a researcher/planner for the Port of Portland and an architectural firm (Higginbotham & Associates) in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Mr. Haugen has a Bachelor of Arts degree in geography/earth science and a Master of Arts degree in physical geography. He is a licensed private pilot with an affinity for maps and aerial imagery that developed with his U.S. Army service in Vietnam during the late 60’s and early 70’s.
Smart Map Imaging specializes in conducting GIS workshops for developing custom imagery and maps that have applications for business, government, and organizations.
